Construction works to provide improved protection from flooding for residents and businesses in the Staffordshire town of Rugeley have moved past the halfway point, and are on schedule to be complete in December.
The scheme, which is being carried out by Team Van Oord (TVO) on behalf of the Environment Agency, will help reduce flood risk to more than 114 residential and 157 commercial properties. It also forms an integral part of the local council’s plans to regenerate parts of the town center.
The proposal includes constructing an embankment on Hagley Playing Field to hold water from Rising Brook during a flood.
Two thirds of the new embankment is now complete, TVO said.
The next stage of the project – continuation of the piling works – will start again mid-late July and will take five weeks to complete. The steel sheet piles will be driven though the center of the embankment into the bedrock to prevent water passing through.
All excavated material is being re-used on site and 2,000 tonnes of stone matting used for the piling rig will be re-used on top of the embankment.
