The long-anticipated Southern Shores Beach Nourishment project could begin this weekend, according to the town’s latest beach fill update.

The town yesterday reported that the project “could possibly begin” this weekend Saturday, July 29th or Sunday, July 30th. The officials added that there is also a possibility to move the start date to mid-August.

It will take approximately 100,000 cy of fill material to fix the most critically eroded portion of the town’s shoreline. The beach quality sand will be dredged from Outer Continental Shelf borrow areas and transported to the beach as a slurry via pipeline.

The town also said that the main placement area for the project will begin at the Kitty Hawk/Southern Shores border and extend 1,500 feet.

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company anticipates that it will take approximately a week to complete the project.

The Town of Southern Shores has scheduled a Public Information briefing for Wednesday August 2nd at 1 pm in the Pitts Center located at 5377 N. Virginia Dare Trl.
