Marine construction work on the Fennovoima’s Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant project in Northern Finland is moving according to schedule, reports the company.

The work, commissioned by Titan-2, is being carried out by Terramare Oy. The two companies signed the hydraulic construction work contract in July 2016.

According to Fennovoima, the work at the Hanhikivi peninsula continues: “ At the moment, e.g. hydraulic construction and dredging works, injections in the bedrock surrounding the plant area, and construction works of the accommodation village are on-going. Approximately 300 people work at the site daily. ”

This hydraulic engineering work is part of the plant supplier’s total contract and includes the dredging and hydraulic engineering work for the harbor, the sea route, and the back-up intake channel for cooling water.

During the dredging and water construction work in the harbor, Terramare will remove approximately 690.000m³ of dredged material from the seabed and do underwater blasting of approximately 200.000m³. Dredging material is being transported to the marine spoil area about 10 kilometers west of the Hanhikivi headland.

Fennovoima concluded that the dredging work will be done 24/7 during the open water period. Giving consideration to the fish spawning season, blasting work can be conducted during the period from May 20th to October 10th.

The project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2018.
