Since 2011 Boskalis has been involved in the construction of the Açu Port in São João da Barra, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), one of the largest greenfield ports in the Americas.
The Açu Port consists of two terminals: T1, an offshore terminal for handling iron ore and oil, and T2, an onshore terminal built around the inner navigation channel which accommodates offshore supply companies and will handle bauxite, general cargo and vehicles.
Between 2011 and 2015 Boskalis was responsible for the development of a large part of Açu Port, which included the construction of two access channels, a turning basin, an inner channel and mooring berths as well as the 2.4 kilometer of revetments for the inner harbor’s protection.
In 2017, the company was busy with the deepening, widening and extension of the access channel and turning basin. In total, over 30 million cubic meters of sand, silt and clay was dredged.
For this project one jumbo and two large trailing suction hopper dredgers were deployed.
