Oil major Shell has taken a semi-submersible rig on a term charter from the Italian offshore drilling rig provider Saipem.

Offshore Energy Today reported in late December 2017 that Saipem won a new contract from Shell for the drilling of one well, plus an optional well, offshore Norway.

The drilling will be carried out by the 6th generation semi-submersible Scarabeo 8.

According to information provided by website VesselsValue, the deal between Shell and Saipem for the rig was fixed on December 22, 2017, for a term of two months. Namely, the rig will begin the contract with Shell on July 1 and end on August 31.

The rig previously worked for Eni Norge and in September 2017 hit dust while drilling the Goliat Eye wildcat well in the Barents Sea, offshore Norway.

According to latest AIS data, the Scarabeo 8 semi-sub has been moored in Olen, Norway, since October.

The rig is a semi-submersible drilling rig of the Moss CS50 MKII type, operated by Saipem Norge. It complies with Norwegian regulation and standards and holds the DNV Winterization Basic class notation and can operate in the Barents Sea all year around.
