Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company (GLDD) has once again been selected as the contractor for the City of Cocoa Beach Renourishment project.
According to the city’s latest update, GLDD will next week begin the renourishment operations. “ Projected construction dates are January 25 through the end of March. ”
“ Seven miles of the 9.4 mile North Reach (Port to Patrick) will get sand. It should cover all of Cocoa Beach except for the stretch from about the Hampton Inn to 2nd Street North ,” the city said.
The Brevard County beaches are routinely maintained every 5-6 years, with the last project completed in 2014. Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Irma this year made it necessary for an expedited replenishment schedule, which was organized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in coordination with Brevard County.
Working under the contract with the Army Corps, GLDD will – for this season – remove approximately 1.172 million cubic yards from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) regulated offshore Canaveral Shoals II Borrow area.
A total of 825,000 cubic yards will be placed in the North Reach area, which consists of beaches in North Cocoa Beach, and Cape Canaveral. The remaining 397,000 cubic yards will be placed in the South Reach area, which includes beaches in Indialantic and Melbourne Beach.
