A worker of the Cochin Shipyard, who sustained severe burns in the blast that occurred on a drillship under repair at the yard on February 13, is in a critical condition, Cochin Shipyard said in an update on Wednesday.
The shipyard worker has sustained 45 pct burns as well as inhalational injuries.
“He is presently on the ventilator in the intensive care unit (ICU) and is undergoing treatment by a team of doctors,” the update reads, adding that the prognosis is guarded.
Four other workers were receiving medical treatment for the injuries sustained in the blast, however, all of them were reported to be stable.
The site of the accident has been cordoned and is being investigated by the forensic department, Cochin Shipyard said.
The explosion on board MODU Sagae Bhushan that killed five and injured seven workers on Tuesday occurred due to a gas leak detected near the AC compartment area of the ship.
The extent of the damage on the drillship is yet to be determined.
The company said that the source of gas leakage and the reason for the explosion is yet to be confirmed, once the internal inquiry ordered by the company is completed.
