E&P player Spirit Energy is working to extend the life of its Morecambe Bay gas fields off the UK with work currently focused on the normally-unmanned DP6 and DP8 platforms.

Spirit Energy on Tuesday launched a video of its operations in the Morecambe Bay showing the move of an accommodation jack-up barge, the GMS Endurance, from DP6 to DP8 platform.

According to the company, after completing the repair, maintenance and modifications campaign at the DP6 platform, the team on the GMS Endurance has moved to the nearby DP8 installation so they can ‘walk to work’ on the unmanned platform.

Spirit Energy took over the Morecambe Bay fields from Centrica following the combination of Centrica’s E&P business with Bayerngas Norge last year.

The project worth £60 million to refurbish two 5,000-tonne platforms in the East Irish Sea started in mid-2017. The goal of the project is to boost output from the fields which already produce enough gas to heat 1.5 million UK homes.

The video revealed that the first phase of the campaign involving the DP6 platform was completed in late March. Phase two, the maintenance campaign at the DP8 platform, will last around six months.
