New Mein Schiff 1, a next-generation cruise ship being built for German cruise line TUI Cruises, departed Meyer Turku shipyard on Monday morning, April 16, for a round of sea trials.
Several of the ship’s technical capabilities need to be tested before the ship is delivered to its owner, the Finish shipbuilding company, owned by German shipbuilder Meyer Werft GmbH, said on social media.
Arctia’s icebreaker Fennica led the way to clear the path from potential ice rafts that could have obstructed clear navigation to the cruise ship and damage its bottom.
New Mein Schiff 1 is scheduled to be named in Hamburg on May 11, 2018, and begin operating shortly afterward.
The vessel is an evolution of the Mein Schiff 6. Measuring 315 meters in length, the newbuilding is 20 meters longer than its predecessor.
The ship was launched in September 2017, and it is the fifth ship built by Meyer Turku shipyard for German TUI Cruises.
