Greek seamen federation has launched a strike on Wednesday, April 18, suspending the country’s ferry transport.

The 24-hour strike, which has kept the ferries tied in their ports, has been extended until Friday, the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) said.

The action is being pursued in opposition to the announced reform proposed by the government, which would, among other things, allow non-European Union flagged ships to operate in Greece, posing a threat to the job security of Greek crews.

In addition, the reform aims to introduce pension cuts and deteriorate crews’ working conditions by enabling a rise of unregistered labor and work without any insurance, according to the union.
