The Maldives President, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, has taken part in a ceremony held to mark the completion of the airport land reclamation project in Funadhoo Island.

According to the presidency office website, the special ceremony that was held at Sh. Funadhoo on Monday, July 2nd marked the completion of the land reclamation project and beginning of the runway works for the new airport.

The scheme was conducted by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company’s new trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Mahaa Jarraafu. Under this major land reclamation project, the new TSHD was used to crate a total of 21 hectares of new land.

The vessel, belonging to the Easydredge series of standard twin-screw trailing suction hopper dredgers, was designed and built by Royal IHC yard in Qidong, China.

TSHD Mahaa Jarraafu has a length overall of 92.95 meters and a hopper capacity of 3.700m³ per load. Like all ships in the series, she is equipped with the specially designed Easydredge dredging equipment, including a state-of-the-art IHC dredge pump and a slender hull for increased speed and low fuel consumption.
