South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries has started construction of Teekay’s fourth shuttle tanker under the E-Shuttle Tanker series.
Teekay has said that the first steel cutting ceremony for the LNG-powered vessel, to be named “Current Spirit” was held on Monday, March 4.
Teekay’s E-Shuttle tanker series is expected to significantly reduce emissions and fuel consumption, as the 130,000 dwt vessels will operate on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the primary fuel, and a mixture of LNG and recovered volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as the secondary fuel.
The steel cutting ceremony for the first E-Shuttle tanker was held in July 2018 , at the SHI shipyard in Geoje, South Korea. Teekay has described its E-Shuttle tankers as “the most environmentally friendly shuttle tankers ever built.
The E-Shuttle Tankers’ power distribution system is part of Wärtsilä’s Low Loss Hybrid (LLH) system, using batteries help with fuel savings, peak load shaving and added overall system redundancy.
Teekay has said that the annual emission reduction potential is estimated at up to 42%, with fuel consumption reduced by up to 22% compared to traditional shuttle tankers.
The tanker owner last year said four shuttle tankers would be delivered from the yard in from October 2019 through to 2020. Shuttle tankers are used for transporting oil from offshore fields to land-based terminals.
