One offshore worker has been killed and two injured after a crane-related incident on the Eni-operated platform in the Adriatic Sea.
Italian news agency ANSA reported on Tuesday that the crane on the Barbara F platform broke away from the main structure and plummeted into the sea with the operator still in the cabin. The platform is located about 30 miles off the coast of Ancona, Italy.
The news agency further said that divers located the cabin with the body of a 63-year-old Eni worker – whose stint on the platform was set to end on Wednesday – at a depth of around 70 meters.
When it collapsed, the crane also hit a supply vessel, injuring two people on board but the workers are not in critical condition.
A spokesperson for Eni told Offshore Energy Today that the incident happened during an offload operation from the Barbara F to a supply vessel. The spokesperson also said that the body of the crane operator was recovered early on Wednesday morning.
The incident and all the facts are still under investigation.
