Finnish technology company Valmet has been contracted to supply exhaust gas cleaning systems for Hyundai Merchant Marine’s 23,000 TEU boxhip giants.

HMM has 20 units on order from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI).

Valmet is delivering scrubbers for the seven vessels built by DSME, with deliveries starting in 2019.

Deliveries will include hybrid scrubber systems for main engine and generator engines including auxiliary systems and automation. The exhaust gas is washed with seawater in open loop mode and with recirculated water and alkali in closed loop mode.

The containerships are expected for delivery in the second quarter of 2020.

Hyundai Merchant Marine earlier announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a fund for scrubber installation on 19 containerships by the first half of 2020. The total investment amount will be KRW 153.3 billion (USD 135.8 million).
