Swedish engineering group Alfa Laval has entered into a contract with a Chinese shipping company for the maintenance of scrubbers on a total of 31 vessels.
The scrubber upkeep agreement follows a contract from last year under which Alfa Laval was to deliver exhaust gas cleaning systems for the unidentified customer.
Alfa Laval noted that the original order was for the PureSOx open-loop, hybrid-ready scrubber systems to be installed on what the company described as “some of the largest vessels in the world.”
“This service relationship will ensure that the scrubber systems always perform at their peak,” said Sameer Kalra, President of the Marine Division.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a global limit for sulphur in fuel oil used on board ships of 0.50% m/m (mass by mass) from January 1, 2020. The ships can meet the requirement by using low-sulphur compliant fuel oil or by using approved equivalent methods, such as exhaust gas cleaning systems or scrubbers.
