Spain’s imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) soared 68 percent in May when compared to the corresponding month last year, according to the monthly data by the LNG terminal operator Enagás.
LNG imports reached some 20.2 terawatt hours (TWh) in May 2019 as compared to 12 TWh in May 2018.
Total natural gas imports, including piped supplies, increased 11.75 percent to 33.7 TWh. Pipeline supplies from Algeria dropped 41.3 percent to 9.3 TWh, as compared to 15.9 TWh the previous year.
Top LNG supplier to Spain during the month of May 2019 was Nigeria with 4.8 TWh, followed by Trinidad and Tobago (4.7 TWh) and Qatar (3.6 TWh).
Spain imported 2.3 TWh of LNG from Russia, followed by 1.98 TWh of LNG from the United States, and 1.91 TWh from Algeria, with Angola supplying 1 TWh of LNG.
The Barcelona regasification plant received seven LNG shipments out of the total 22 cargoes imported into Spain during the month under review.
Huelva also received seven LNG cargoes while Bilbao took six shipments in May with Cartagena facility unloaded 2 cargoes. No cargoes were delivered to the Mugardos and Sagunto facilities.
Barcelona LNG facility also completed one reload during the month.
