A Philippine roll-on/roll-off vessel caught fire while docked and under repair at FF Cruz Wharf, Mandaue City, Cebu around 4 a.m. local time on June 10.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Philippine Coast Guard personnel responded to the fire incident onboard the 11,457 GT MV Trans Asia 1.

The multi-role response vessel BRP Suluan, together with search operation unit-central Visayas, marine environmental protection unit (MEPU) and Coast Guard Sub-Station Mandaue personnel proceeded to the area for the assessment and inspection of a possible oil spill and to render firefighting.

The fire was put out at around 7 p.m. the same day, the coast guard said.

The authorities informed that there were no signs of an oil spill.

The fire allegedly started at the galley air blower, however other causes of the incident are still under investigation.

One of the ship’s 36 crew members sustained a minor injury and was sent to University of Cebu Medical Center.

Built in 1980, the 4,800 dwt Trans Asia 1 is operated by Trans Asia Shipping, according to data provided by VesselsValue.
