The Mexican government is upgrading the Port of Manzanillo, one of the country’s main Pacific Ocean ports, with four new terminals.
The terminals will include a specialized container facility with capacity to handle 1.75 million TEUs per year, another for agricultural bulk, one more for mineral bulk and one specialized for hydrocarbons.
As understood, the government expects to source around MXN 23.5 billion (USD 1.2 billion) from public and private entities to fund the project.
The authorities have already undertaken dredging of the navigation channel and other environmental works in the northern area of the port.
During the first five months of this year, Port of Manzanillo handled 13.5 million tons of cargo and 1.24 million TEUs, an increase of 1.2 and 4.8 percent, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
