The U.S.-based cruise company Disney Cruise Line has unveiled the name of the fifth ship in its fleet and the first of three newbuilds ordered from Germany’s Meyer Werft shipyard.
The cruise ship is scheduled to be delivered in late 2021 as Disney Wish. It is expected to set sail in January 2022.
The three new ships will be powered by liquefied natural gas and, at approximately 144,000 gross tons and 1,250 guest staterooms, will be slightly larger than the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.
The company ordered the three ships in 2016 and 2017 .
The company also shared details about plans for a second island destination for Disney Cruise Line on the Eleuthera island in The Bahamas.
“With three new ships joining our fleet, we thought this would be an … opportunity to add another … destination to our ports of call,” Bob Chapek, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman, said.
Disney Cruise Line completed its purchase of privately owned Lighthouse Point earlier this year and signed an agreement with the Government of The Bahamas for the development of the site. The company has committed to develop less than 20 percent of the property and construct an open-trestle pier that eliminates the need to dredge a ship channel. Construction could begin in 2020 with completion in late 2022 or 2023, according to Disney Cruise Line.
