UK-based Specialist Marine Consultants (SMC) has been awarded a contract to provide marine coordination services to Siemens Gamesa across the Formosa 1 Phase 2 offshore wind farm in Taiwan.

The Formosa 1 Phase 2 project will comprise 20 6MW Siemens Gamesa wind turbines and is an extension to the already operating 8MW Formosa 1 Phase 1 wind farm which also features Siemens Gamesa turbines.

Formosa 1 Phase 2 represents the 35th marine coordination project SMC have delivered to the offshore wind sector.

The company is also a client representative services provider on the project across several installation scopes.

SMC Operations Director, Dean Coates , said: “We are extremely pleased to continue our work with SGRE on what is yet another flagship endeavour for both companies. This contract is our 3rd Marine Coordination contract in Taiwan, adding to our experience in providing further services to the region. Taiwan and the wider East Asian market have become a particularly important area of focus for SMC in recent years and we look forward to providing continued and experienced support to this emerging market.”

Currently under construction some 6 kilometres off the west coast of the Miaoli district in the Taiwan Strait, the Formosa 1 Phase 2 wind farm is expected to be commissioned in 2020.
