Klaveness Combination Carriers’ (KCC) third CLEANBU vessel departed New Yangzi Shipyard in China on September 25, beginning its first employment.
The vessel, MV Barramundi, is on its way to perform the first voyage carrying caustic soda from Korea to Australia, the Norwegian shipowner said.
The first employment will be followed by transportation of alumina from Australia to the Middle East Gulf. At the end of October, MV Barramundi is expected to start combination trading.
Last week, the abovementioned Chinese shipyard handed over the Panamax bulk carrier newbuilding to KCC.
The 82,400 dwt Barramundi is the third of eight contracted CLEANBU combination carriers that will be delivered by New Yangzi Shipyard to Klaveness between 2019 and 2021.
The first vessel from the batch, MV Baru , was delivered in January this year and the second, MV Barracuda, in late July.
As explained by Klaveness, the next generation of combination carriers has an advanced vessel design, environmental performance as well as operational and technical efficiency. These vessels have up to 40% lower CO2 emissions per ton mile transported cargo compared to standard vessels and go a long way in meeting IMO’s 2050 targets of a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions from shipping.
With the delivery of the MV Barramundi, KCC will operate a fleet of 12 combination carriers.
