Due to an energy-intensive process of extracting its heavy oil, Canada has the highest carbon emission intensity per barrel of oil equivalent produced, while Norway has the lowest due to its carbon pricing mechanism and ban on flaring, a Rystad Energy analysis shows.

Rystad Energy, a Norwegian energy intelligence firm, has kickstarted its global emissions coverage, gathering key data and ranking the world’s oil and gas producers by how much CO2 is emitted in connection with their upstream activities.
