The Danish Energy Agency and Energinet have made available the first results and data from site investigations carried out at the Thor offshore wind farm site.

As part of the preliminary investigations for the site in the Danish North Sea, Energinet is conducting preliminary geotechnical, geophysical, and biological surveys, as well as collecting metocean data.

Environmental assessments are also being carried out, including a Strategic Environmental Assessment and a number of additional surveys.

The information in the reports and data is primarily aimed at potential bidders, but the environmental reports are also relevant for stakeholders in relation to the environmental assessments process.

The collected data will be available from August 2020 until April 2021, when the last update will be done.

The Thor offshore wind farm will be located west of Thorsminde by Nissum Fjord at leats 20 kilometres from the shore. The wind farm will have a capacity of between 800 MW and 1,000 MW.

Danish Energy Agency plans to start the tendering procedure for the wind farm in the third quarter of 2020 with the issuance of the contract notice and the tender documents.

The tendering procedure will be closed in the fourth quarter of 2021 with the selection of the winning bid.

The wind farm is expected to be connected to the grid between 2024 and 2027.

As part of the Energy Agreement signed in 2018, the Danish government decided to establish three new large-scale offshore wind farms before 2030, which will expand the supply of energy from offshore wind by at least 2,400 MW.

The first of the three wind farms to be tendered is Thor. The second is the up to 1.2 GW Hesselø project in Kattegat which is also expected to be commissioned by 2027.
