Kongsberg Maritime has secured a contract with Wood to supply positioning and monitoring equipment for the Hywind Tampen floating offshore wind farm.

Kongsberg will supply its DPS position reference system and Motion Reference Unit (MRU) for what will be the world’s largest floating offshore wind farm.

The DPS exploits all available GNSS infrastructure to deliver position information and is suited to monitor the location of the turbines relative to the seabed, the company said.

The MRU will check roll, pitch, yaw and heave motion, informing the blade trimming system to ensure that the turbine is not overloaded in strong winds and thus likely to become unstable. Marine traffic situational awareness and visibility to other vessels will be facilitated by the AIS AQ610 base station.

Hywind Tampen will feature 11 Siemens Gamesa 8 MW turbines installed about 140 km off the Norwegian coast in water depths of between 260 and 300 m.

Construction on the 88 MW project started in October 2020.

Once operational at the end of 2022, the wind farm will be directly connected to the Snorre A and B and Gullfaks A, B and C oil & gas platforms.
