Wärtsilä bags 36 engines order for Arctic LNG 2 carriers

The Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has been contracted to supply dual-fuel engines for six new 172,500 cbm Arctic LNG 2 carriers.

The Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has been contracted to supply dual-fuel engines for six new 172,500 cbm Arctic LNG 2 carriers.

The order, which is valued at more than EUR 100 million, was placed in December 2020 by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering.

The order includes an option for a further four ships., Wärtsilä noted in its statement on Thursday.

“This is a major newbuild project, and we were able to propose a technical solution that ensures clear benefits and cost savings for the customer,” says Östen Lindell , sales director, East Asia & China, Wärtsilä Marine Power.

Each vessel will be fitted with six Wärtsilä 46DF dual-fuel engines, plus gas valve units and auxiliaries.

Deliveries of the equipment will commence in August 2021, Wärtsilä said.

Wärtsilä has earlier supplied the engines for 15 ships serving the Yamal LNG project, as well as numerous dual-fuel engines for other LNG carriers built at the Daewoo yard.

The Novatek-led Arctic LNG 2 envisages constructing three LNG liquefaction trains of 6.6 million tons per annum each, as well as a cumulative gas condensate production capacity of 1.6 million tons per annum.

The total LNG capacity of the three liquefaction trains will be 19.8 million tons.

The project utilizes a construction concept using gravity-based structure (GBS) platforms to reduce overall capital cost and minimize the project’s environmental footprint in the Arctic zone of Russia.

The project’s participants include Novatek (60 per cent), Total (10 per cent), CNPC (10 per cent), CNOOC (10 per cent) and the consortium of Mitsui and JOGMEC (10 per cent).
