TenneT, Statnett and KfW have officially commissioned the 1,400 MW NordLink interconnector between Norway and Germany.
Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and Norway’s Prime Minister Erna Solberg launched the NordLink submarine cable today, 27 May.
The so-called ‘Green Cable’ will facilitate the exchange of Norwegian hydropower and German wind energy.
“Today and with NordLink, Germany and Norway are moving even closer together. The first direct electricity bridge not only helps to stabilise energy prices in both countries. NordLink is a milestone for sustainable energy supply and climate protection in Europe. Because the focus is on exchanging renewable energy,” Angela Merkel said.
The connection is 623 kilometers long and runs between Tonstad in Sirdal municipality in Norway and Wilster in Schleswig-Holstein in Germany.
Trial operations started in December last year and the HVDC power cable went into operation this March.
Nexans and NKT produced and supplied the submarine and underground cables for the project.
