Japanese shipping major Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) took delivery of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Diamond Gas Crystal, built at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI).

The Singapore flagged ship, owned by NYK , Asia LNG Transport Dua Sdn. Bhd. (ALT Dua), and MC through joint venture Diamond LNG Shipping 5 Pte, will transport LNG from LNG Canada project in British Columbia to other locations worldwide.

LNG Canada project, considered as one of the largest investments in the history of Canada, is a joint venture among Shell, PETRONAS, PetroChina, Mitsubishi and KOGAS, build with aim to export Canadian natural gas to Asian markets.

With an overall length of 297 meters and breadth 46,4 meters, the ship will feature a WinGD-made dual-fuel slow-speed diesel engine, so-called X-DF diesel engine, which is said to improve ship’s efficiency and environmental performace.

As disclosed, the vessel is also equipped with a re-liquefaction system that can use re-liquefied excess boil-off gas and return it to the cargo tank.

The cargo tank is a 174,000 cbm capacity membrane-type tank that uses advanced insulating materials to suppress the boil-off rate – the percentage of gas volume that vaporizes during navigation – in the cargo tank. The design features will contribute to efficiency and economical LNG transportation, according to NYK.

The delivery is part of NYK’s business strategy announced in February, the NYK Group ESG Story.

The ESG strategy focuses on activities to support ESG management and environmental sustainability from a long-term perspective.

Reflecting on Japan’s pledge to reduce GHG emissions to net zero by 2050, NYK said that the reduction of emissions will be a prerequisite for business continuity.

By FY2030, NYK wants to phase out GHG emissions by 30 per cent and by FY2050 by 50 per cent.
