Shell-led LNG Canada has reached a new milestone when a critical piece of infrastructure has arrived at the project site in Kitimat.
The inlet facilities module will serve as the entry point for natural gas delivered to the LNG Canada site via the new Coastal GasLink ( CGL ) pipeline. This marked another phase in construction activities at Canada’s first major LNG facility.
Furthermore, this is one of more than a dozen process modules for the facility and the first to arrive in Kitimat. The new module will receive natural gas directly from the CGL pipeline. Then, it will distribute natural gas to treatment facilities and processes, including liquefaction and storage. This is all before it is loaded into specialized carriers for marine transport.
Finally, it will go to markets that need low-carbon LNG to replace other energy sources such as coal.
Over several days, the inlet facilities module move from LNG Canada’s new offloading facility at the Port of Kitimat to its place at the main LNG processing site.
The module will then be placed on a foundation specifically designed to accommodate its dimensions. Thus, it will join several other large pieces of LNG infrastructure installed in recent months.
LNG Canada CEO Peter Zebedee says this milestone signifies that the project is now approaching 60 per cent completion .
“This is a very important year for us, with a pace of construction not seen previously. W e’re making excellent progress as we advance through construction and prepare for 40 years of safe operations. We remain committed to delivering our first cargo by the middle of this decade.”
