Yangzijiang Shipbuilding orders tank design of LNG carrier duo at GTT

French LNG containment specialist GTT has received its first order for the tank design of two LNG carriers from its new partner, the Chinese shipyard Yangzijiang, on behalf of a European ship owner.

The delivery of the vessels is scheduled between the fourth quarter of 2025 and the second quarter of 2026.

The two vessels will each offer a cargo capacity of 175,000 m3, and the tanks will be fitted with the Mark III Flex membrane containment system developed by GTT.

Mark III technology is a cryogenic liner used to contain liquefied gas at low temperatures during shipping, onshore, and offshore storage, at atmospheric pressure.

This Mark III membrane system, a containment and insulation system, directly supported by the ship’s hull structure, is composed of a primary corrugated stainless steel membrane, positioned on top of prefabricated insulation panels, including a complete secondary membrane made of composite material.

According to GTT, it employs standard prefabricated components that can accommodate any shapes and capacities of tanks and are designed for mass production techniques and easy assembly.

Its latest development, Mark III Flex+, offers a boil-off rate of 0.07% V/day, while its predecessor, Mark III Flex offers a boil-off rate from 0.10 to 0.085% V/day.

Yangzijiang shipyard order is the latest of many GTT’s endeavours that include orders from Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, Hyundai Heavy Industries, and others.

Earlier in December, South Korean shipyard Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) ordered the tank design for seven new LNG carriers from GTT, with each set to offer a capacity of 174,000 m3.
