KBR technology selected for green ammonia project in Chile

US engineering company KBR has secured a contract to provide its green ammonia technology for a green ammonia project, called HyEx, in Chile.

KBR’s K-GreeN technology has been selected by Enaex , a manufacturer and supplier of explosives and blasting agents, for the project that aims to demonstrate operation stability of the production of green ammonia using renewable energy from photovoltaic power plants.

For this project, Toyo Engineering Corporation will undertake front-end engineering and design (FEED) work based on KBR’s proprietary technology and basic engineering design.

According to information on Enaex’s website, the HyEx HyEx is a project to replace its current grey ammonia imports with locally produced green ammonia with the use of renewable energies in Chile.

It is divided into two phases. Phase 1 is scheduled for 2025 to produce 18,000 metric tons of green ammonia by using green hydrogen produced by ENGIE from a 26 MW electrolysis plant.

Phase 2, due to commence in 2030, is planned to produce about 700,000 metric tons of green ammonia coming from a 2800 MW electrolysis plan to feedstock Enaex’s plant and enable the export of green energy to the rest of the world.

“We are thrilled to be part of this project that will demonstrate Chile’s potential to harness renewable energy for green ammonia production”, said Doug Kelly , KBR President, Technology. “The innovative concepts that will be incorporated in this project will achieve industrial scale production of green ammonia using renewable energy from photovoltaic and wind power.”
