Venture Global hits construction milestone at Plaquemines LNG

US-based Venture Global LNG has reached a project milestone with the raising of the roof of the first LNG storage tank at its Plaquemines LNG export facility under construction in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.

According to Venture Global, the milestone was completed ahead of schedule and comes nine months after the project’s final investment decision (FDI).

To remind, the company announced the FID and closing of the $13.2 billion financing for the Plaquemines LNG facility and the associated pipeline in May 2022.

Now, the roof of the first tank of four in total for the project has been raised. When operational, it will be able to store 200,000 m3 of LNG. The roof weighs 900 tons and is 294 feet in diameter.

Venture Global explained that, eventually, the tank will have an inner tank made from 9% nickel alloy and an outer wall and outer roof made from concrete to provide full containment of the LNG and provide the maximum level of resilience and safety.

“I would like to thank both our team and partners at CB&I for the safe and successful roof raising of the first tank at Plaquemines LNG, an exciting milestone in the construction of our second LNG export facility “ , said Mike Sabel , CEO of Venture Global LNG.

Just recently, the company signed two 20-year LNG sales and purchase agreements (SPA) with China Gas Hongda Energy Trading, a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Gas Holdings, under which the latter will buy 1 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG on a free-on-board (FOB) basis from Plaquemines LNG and another 1 million mtpa from the CP2 LNG export facility.
