Taiwan’s state-owned oil and gas company CPC has selected Japanese engineering firm JFE Engineering Corporation for the construction of large-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal.
On 28 March, JFE Engineering said it secured a contract for the design, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) support for the LNG terminal to be located 1.2 kilometres offshore Taoyuan City.
As disclosed, the deal is worth about 30 billion yen (nearly $230 million)
The contract covers equipment to remove LNG from transport ships, pipelines and tanks, along with facilities to transport seawater to heat the ultra-cooled LNG and return it to a gaseous state.
The construction is expected to be completed in 2025.
The terminal is said to be in line with the current sustainable energy policy promoted by the Taiwanese government to support energy transition. The development of natural gas infrastructure is an urgent task in the country which seeks to produce 50% of its power from natural gas by 2025.
CPC is doing its part in helping Taiwan to meet these clean energy aspirations by rapidly expanding its LNG import terminals.
The company owns and operates the Taichung LNG terminal and the project to design and build LNG tanks for the CPC Taichung Phase 3 began last year. Bechtel is executing the engineering, procurement, and construction of two 180,000 cbm full containment LNG tanks, which are believed to be Taiwan’s largest storage tanks ever built.
In April 2022, CPC also awarded front end engineering & design (FEED) contract to DGPS , a wholly-owned subsidiary of Osaka Gas, for Phase 4 of the Taichung LNG expansion project.
The Phase 4 expansion project includes building four LNG storage tanks, each with 180,000 cbm storage capacity. In addition, it includes regasification facilities and a jetty for LNG tankers.
After its completion in 2029, the LNG handling capacity of Taichung LNG will increase to 13 million tonnes per annum.
