Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, has revealed that energy provider Onyx Power plans to build a low-carbon blue hydrogen production plant at its existing site in the port.

With a capacity of 1,200 MW, the plant is expected to produce some 300 kilotonne per annum blue hydrogen, and the Rotterdam port said the CO2 produced while making the hydrogen would be captured and stored in depleted offshore gas fields. It noted that by doing so, 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 could be saved annually.

The port also said that, in order to be able to develop the project, Onyx Power announced to the responsible Environmental Protection Agency (DCMR) to carry out an environmental impact assessment in accordance with the Environmental Management Act. To note, as part of the procedure, the company published a Notitie Reikwijdte en Detailniveau (NRD), which describes the intended scope of the environmental impact assessment.

This latest Onyx Power project is part of the company’s efforts to boost decarbonisation.

At the end of 2022, the Dutch Cabinet took the lead on energy infrastructure projects that revolve around the development of the hydrogen infrastructure, and among the projects’ key players is Onyx Power.
