Brazil’s Ceara state government and GoVerde Energia & Apollo Asset have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the aim of producing solar energy and green ammonia at the port of Pecém.

The MoU was signed ahead of the second annual conference World Hydrogen Latin America which is scheduled to take place on December 12-14, 2023.

GoVerde’s New Business Director, Ricardo Junqueira , said the planned facility will be capable of producing 40 tons per day of green ammonia in the first phase of the project, with another 250 tons in the second and another 200 tons in the third phase.

With the expected investment of $597.6 million, the project will be implemented in the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP), which the government plans to turn into a green hydrogen hub.

These plans were set in motion in 2022 when integrated storage solutions provider Stolthaven Terminals, part of the Stolt-Nielsen Group, and the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex, a joint venture formed by the Ceará State Government and the Port of Rotterdam, signed a MoU for the study of a new storage terminal in Pecém port.

The terminal will focus on providing storage and handling services for green hydrogen and associated products.

With huge ambition and potential, Latin America has an opportunity to become a global clean hydrogen powerhouse thanks to its resources such as ample sun, wind, and in some regions, hydroenergy.
