Finland-based shipping company RABN – Rederi Ab Nathalie has decided to equip its general cargo ship Odda Marie with a wind-assisted propulsion system and a shore power system.
The 1996-built Odda Marie is presently in dry-dock at Damen shipyards in Harlingen where the modifications are done as part of the scheduled dry-docking scope.
The lifetime extension includes many technical upgrades and overhauls to existing technologies but also some new features will be installed.
As informed, the carbon footprint of the vessel will be improved by installing wind-assisted propulsion system called VentoFoils provided by Dutch company Econowind and a shore power system enabling zero emission loading/discharging during port calls.
The total investment to lifetime extension corresponds circa 25% of subject vessels secondhand value. The actions taken hereby can be considered as a serious step towards more sustainable operations, RABN explained.
“The decision to invest in wind-assisted propulsion with Econowind’s VentoFoils is logical and fully in-line with our ‘outside the box’ mindset. We see great potential in windpropulsion in certain traffic areas. The North Sea is one of most optimal areas where our Odda Marie is trading,” RABN – Rederi Ab Nathalie said.
“The decision to invest in this endeavor demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and innovation within the maritime industry. The installation of our VentoFoils wind-assisted propulsion system will not only improve the vessel’s carbon footprint (EEXI) but also contribute to more efficient and environmentally friendly operation in emissions per Nautical Mile. Done within 8 months from order to delivery,” Econowind added.
