Air Products Canada, a subsidiary of U.S. industrial gases supplier Air Products, has awarded Australian engineering company Worley an agreement to provide procurement, fabrication and modularization services for its net-zero hydrogen energy complex in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Under the agreement, Worley’s Edmonton modularization yard will fabricate and assemble process and pipe rack modules, implementing automated pipe-cutting techniques and robotic welding, Worley revealed, noting that the yard is located adjacent to Air Product’s hydrogen complex.

“We’re pleased to work with Air Products on this significant complex, consistent with our purpose of delivering a more sustainable world, as we partner with our customers to deliver a lower carbon future,” said Chris Ashton, CEO of Worley.

Once operational, the net-zero complex is expected to produce clean hydrogen and capture and permanently sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

In 2021, Air Products announced that the complex will consist of an auto-thermal reformer (ATR) hydrogen production facility, carbon capture operations, a power generation facility, a 30-tons-per-day hydrogen liquefaction facility, an air separation facility and a connection to the company’s existing Alberta heartland hydrogen pipeline network.

According to Air Products, the hydrogen facility, whose construction is well underway, will help to accelerate the use of hydrogen as an emission-free transportation fuel across western Canada.

Seifi Ghasemi, Air Products’ Chairman, President and CEO, stated in 2021 that the “project will be a model for net-zero atmospheric gas, hydrogen and power production consistent with our announced growth platforms.”
