Swedish maritime battery system supplier Echandia has received an order to deliver battery systems to a Northern European ferry operator.
The order involves converting two roll-on/roll-off passenger (RoPax) ferries to pure electric propulsion. Delivery is planned for the second half of 2025.
It is Echandia’s largest order to date, both in terms of value and system size, the company said.
Echandia’s systems are installed to significantly reduce both fossil fuel emissions and fuel costs. The battery systems are designed to meet the customer’s requirement for a ten-year lifespan, according to the company.
“We are seeing a clear trend towards more and larger orders for converting ferries from fossil fuel to electric propulsion. This order is our largest to date and the result of focused work on both our products and partnerships within the maritime sector. This also solidifies that we are now seriously considered one of the leading suppliers in maritime electrification. An important milestone for Echandia,” Fredrik Hellström , CEO of Echandia, commented.
Earlier this month, Echandia was contracted by compatriot ferry company Öresundslinjen to provide a battery system for the conversion of M/S Hamlet from fossil fuel to full electrical operation. Echandia will deliver the battery system tailored for a minimum operational lifespan of ten years without requiring battery replacement.
