Norwegian container tonnage provider MPC Container Ships (MPCC) has christened two green methanol-ready 5,500 TEU containerships in South Korea.
As informed, the newest eco-design vessels were named Mackenzie and Colorado at a ceremony held at Korean shipyard HJ Shipbuilding & Construction.
The vessels are designed for conversion to methanol operations, potentially achieving up to 90% emission reductions with “green” methanol. Furthermore, they feature environmentally friendly designs that could reduce fuel consumption by 40%.
“With these additions, we continue to enhance our fleet’s efficiency and environmental footprint, aligning with our commitment to sustainable shipping solutions,” MPCC stated.
The boxships, which will join MPCC’s fleet this year, will be delivered into 7-year charters with Israel’s shipowner ZIM Integrated Shipping Services.
To remind, the contract for the construction of two containerships was signed in April 2022.
Recently, the shipowner signed a $55 million pre- and post-delivery ECA-covered financing agreement with Deutsche Bank and SINOSURE for its two dual-fuel methanol newbuildings. The order for these vessels was placed last year. The ships are scheduled for delivery towards the end of 2024 and are secured by 15-year time charter agreements with North Sea Container Line (NCL).
