Call issued to investigate hydrogen use in Nova Scotia’s industrial sector

Research organization Net Zero Atlantic has issued a call for proposals for a study which is set to investigate the feasibility and the GHG emission reduction potential of using hydrogen in industrial process heating within Nova Scotia, Canada.

The study, called “Decarbonizing Nova Scotia’s Industrial Sector with Green Hydrogen,” involves three of Nova Scotia’s largest manufacturers – The Shaw Group, Port Hawkesbury Paper and Michelin North America, and is being supported by Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources and Renewables Clean Fuels Fund.

According to Net Zero Atlantic, the objective of this Request for Proposal (RFP) is to secure the services of a consultant to undertake the project.

Phase 1 of the project will involve conducting a public-facing study aimed at providing insights to stakeholders, including the involved manufacturers, federal and provincial policymakers, industry organizations and the public, regarding the integration of hydrogen technologies into industrial process heating applications in Nova Scotia.

Phase 2 will consist of a series of studies aimed at determining the feasibility of using hydrogen within each of the working group members’ facilities for process heating, i.e. the operation of boilers or kilns.

In the request for proposals, the manufacturers acknowledged the role low-carbon fuels will play in decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries in Atlantic Canada, adding: “We also recognize that sustainable local industry and manufacturing are essential for our communities and these organizations will play a leading role in the energy transition within Atlantic Canada.”

Net Zero Atlantic said that the questions from the potential respondents will be accepted until Wednesday, June 19, 2024, after which an FAQ will be published. Applications are due on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 – 1:00 pm.
