Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has joined the Smart Freight Center’s (SFC) community as the newest member.
Smart Freight Center, headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, is an international non-profit organization engaged in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from freight transportation.
Focusing on various sectors of the logistics industry, SFC establishes guidelines for decarbonization in logistics by visualizing GHG emissions and providing recommendations for the reduction of transportation.
In addition, to address GHG emissions from international logistics, it promotes collaboration among various organizations and associations in international logistics.
The target is to keep the global average temperature increase below 1.5°C by achieving zero emissions by 2050.
Recently, SFC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Green Marine, a voluntary environmental certification program for the North American and European maritime industries, to support decarbonization.
Last month, the center also welcomed Japanese shipping major NYK as its newest member.

As part of its decarbonization agenda, MOL is promoting initiatives to solve environmental and other issues. The company wants to accelerate these initiatives throughout its value chain.
One of the firm’s newest projects is installing wind propulsion systems on a total of seven newbuilding bulk carriers and multi-purpose vessels. With the latest number of ships, MOL Group will have a total of nine Wind Challenger-equipped vessels, bringing the total number of vessels equipped with wind propulsion systems to eleven.
