Singapore’s shipping player Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) and compatriot green technology company Yinson GreenTech (YGT) have completed the first cargo and crew deliveries made with a fully electric vessel in Singapore.
This milestone took place on June 25 when Singapore’s first fully electric cargo vessel Hydromover completed the delivery to EPS’ Pacific Sentinel.
Launched in November 2023, Hydromover is a lightweight, 18.5-meter vessel equipped with swappable batteries, allowing it to transport up to 25 tonnes of cargo. Being all-electric, the ship has zero emissions and targets to achieve up to 50% operational cost savings due to improved energy efficiency and lower maintenance costs.
This electric cargo delivery is said to signify the culmination of extensive planning and collaboration between YGT and EPS and pave the way for the wider adoption of electric vessels.
To remind, the two companies recently formed a partnership to to work on electric vessel deployments in Singapore. This collaboration, spearheaded by YGT’s marine electrification business, marinEV, aims to further integrate electric vessels into last-mile delivery operations, significantly reducing Scope 3 emissions and contributing to a cleaner shipping industry.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), in alignment with its decarbonization efforts, is mandating all harbor craft to transition to fully electric, capable of using biofuels or being compatible with net-zero fuels like hydrogen by 2030 .
The first fully electric PXO tug (e-tug) and supply boat (e-boat) designed for Singapore’s waters by the Coastal Sustainability Alliance (CSA) is scheduled for delivery in 2025, ahead of the goal set by MPA.
Singapore also recently witnessed the launch of the first 100% electric passenger vessel, X Tron . Developed by maritime start-up Pyxis, the battery-powered vessel has a range of up to 50 nautical miles and will operate out of Marina South Pier.
