Longship welcomes first diesel-electric vessel from Atlas Shipyard

Dutch shipping company Longship has taken delivery of the first out of four ultra-low-emission, diesel-electric general cargo ships from Türkiye’s Atlas Shipyard.

As informed, the vessel Longera was handed over on June 25, 2024. According to Longship, its delivery marks the culmination of three years of research and development in the company’s ongoing efforts to modernize its fleet for sustainable future.

Longera is the first in a series of four 8,600 dwt newbuildings that have been ordered at Atlas Shipyard. The order for the ships was placed in January last year.

The ship features a diesel-electric propulsion system that delivers a reduction in consumption of about 45 percent when compared to the currently dominant ship types of similar size. The vessel design is compliant with the EU Stage V standards applicable to non-road mobile machinery (NRMM), according to the shipowner.

Furthermore, the vessels hold the class notation Prepared for Methanol C as hybrid alternative.

Longera is currently underway for its maiden voyage, loaded with windmill blades. Longship highlighted that this voyage signifies not only the beginning of Longera’s operational existence but also the beginning of a new era for the firm in modernizing the fleet to ensure a sustainable future.

Longship, founded in 2009, is a ship operator and logistics company with roots in Norway and the Netherlands.
