The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Japanese shipping company NYK have joined forces to accelerate maritime decarbonization, digitalization, and manpower development efforts, including the promotion of the safe use of marine fuels.
Under the memorandum of understanding signed on July 2, MPA and NYK agreed to deepen their partnership and collaborate on various initiatives for promoting sustainable maritime industry.
The collaboration will include the promotion of the safe use of marine fuels such as biofuels, methanol, and low or zero-carbon ammonia through a phased approach.
MPA and NYK will also discuss maritime training programs for seafarers on ammonia-fueled vessels and other sustainability-related skills and competencies to support the industry’s transition towards alternative low or zero- carbon fuels, including leadership programs for local professionals.

As a major bunkering and a maritime hub port, Singapore is in a phase of introducing alternative fuels and enhancing manpower development. The world’s busiest transshipment hub and largest bunkering port reported a growing demand for greener fuels in 2023. Bunker sales in Singapore reached a record 51.8 million tonnes in 2023, surpassing the previous high, with alternative fuels accounting for 1.2% of the sales, according to MPA.
