Finnish shipping company Finnlines has unveiled its plans that it is evaluating another investment program for green fuel-powered vessels.
The information was unveiled as part of the company’s financial results announcement for the first half of this year.
Finnlines stated that it is “currently evaluating another EUR 400–500 million Green Investment Programme on the Finland–Germany route (Helsinki–Travemünde route).”
“By continuing to invest more in green technology and in green fuel powered vessels, will also lower our clients’ CO2 footprint even further and the investments enable us to remain the number one Green carrier in the Baltic Sea,” the firm further added.
Finnlines’ first €500 million Green Newbuilding Program was completed in February this year when its new RoPax vessel Finncanopus started to operate from Naantali via Långnäs to Kapellskär.
During the last two years, four other new vessels, one other RoPax vessel, Finnsirius, and three Finneco RoRo ships have been delivered and started traffic.
The ships are all equipped with eco-friendly technology, including air-lubrication systems, battery packs, and onshore power capabilities.
Finnlines highlighted that it also seeks further improvement by adjusting the fleet operations so that it can combine cargo flows more efficiently and fully utilize the economies of scale of the vessels and the whole fleet. This also includes selling the vessels that have too little capacity and/or no longer fulfill the environmental requirements.
Furthermore, the Finnish shipowner opened a new line between Malmö (Sweden) and Swinoujscie (Poland) in April 2024 and an official inauguration took place on May 28, 2024, in Malmö port. The new route employs RoPax vessel MS Finnfellow.
