Tunisia has signed six memoranda of understanding (MoU) with European companies for the production of green hydrogen.
The deals were signed on July 29, 2024, under the supervision of the Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy Fatima Thabet Shiboub and in the presence of the Secretary of State in charge of Energy Transition Wael Shoshan .
The companies involved in the six projects include Tunur in cooperation with Aker Horizons and Verbund, Savannah Energy, Hydrogen of France, DEME Hyport, Abo Energy and an alliance of Amarenco and H2 Global.
To note, Tunisia wants to produce 8.3 million tons of green hydrogen and its derivatives by 2050, the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mines said, adding that 2.3 million tons are directed to the local market and 6 million tons for export, with a total investment of €120 billion.
In 2024, the Tunisian government signed an MoU with ACWA Power to explore the potential for a project that would produce up to 600,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen in three phases, for export to Europe.
Furthermore, TE H2, a joint venture between TotalEnergies and EREN Group, together with Verbund, signed an MoU with Tunisia to study the implementation of a large green hydrogen project, H2 Notos, for export to Central Europe.
This project seeks to produce 200,000 tons of green hydrogen annually during its initial phase, with the potential to scale up production to one million tons per year.
