Hanwha Ocean pressing on with construction of LNG carriers for BW LNG

South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean has started the construction of another LNG carrier for Norway-based gas shipping company BW LNG.

On July 24, the steel cutting ceremony was held for the 174,000 cubic meter ship (H2544) in South Korea. The vessel is one of four LNG newbuilds being built by Hanwha Ocean for BW LNG.

The vessel will be propelled by MAN B&W MEGI dual-fuel engines and feature a full re-liquefaction system, air lubrication system, and shaft generators for superior fuel consumption and lower emissions.

Smart Air compressors , which can offer up to 40% energy saving compared to conventional compressors, will be provided by TMC Compressors.

The ship is scheduled for delivery in 2025.

Construction of another vessel in this series began in November 2023.

Earlier this year, the Norwegian shipowner purchased two LNG carriers from Swedish tanker shipping company Stena Bulk.

The addition of two tankers brought the number of vessels in BW LNG’s fleet up to 34, including four newbuilds under construction and four floating storage regasification units (FSRUs). Furthermore, according to the company, the two new tankers have the potential of becoming FSRUs in the future.
