Knutsen welcomes eighth energy-efficient LNG carrier for charter with Shell

Norwegian shipping company Knutsen Group has received new energy-efficient LNG carrier for charter with energy giant Shell from South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI).

The 174,000 cubic meter LNG carrier named Nantes Knutsen was delivered to the shipowner on September 13, 2024.

The vessel comes equipped with a dual-fuel X-DF engine and energy-efficient solutions such as air lubrication system, shaft generations, and a reliquefaction system , contributing to a lower carbon footprint.

Nantes Knutsen is eighth in a series of nine LNG carriers that will be chartered to Shell.

The seventh vessel Paris Knutsen was delivered in September 2023. The sixth unit in the series Extremadura Knutsen , was handed over to the shipping company in February 2023.

Vessels number four and number five, Huelva Knutsen and Ferrol Knusten , were delivered to the shipowner in October 2022 and January 2023, respectively.

In other company-related news, Kntusen joined forces with Lloyd’s Register (LR), HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for a joint development project (JDP) to study environmental impact across the entire life cycle of an LNG carrier .

The JDP will measure carbon emissions for the entire life cycle of a ship from raw material extraction to decommissioning/recycling of the ship, including equipment & component manufacture, its transportation to the shipyard, construction and commissioning, operation and the maintenance of the ship.
