Purus books two dual-fuel ammonia-ready gas carriers at South Korean shipyard

Purus, a provider of maritime services for the gas transport and offshore wind industries, has placed an order for the construction of two dual-fuel ammonia-ready medium-sized gas carriers (MGCs) at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea.

The 45,000 cubic meter vessels, expected to transport ammonia primarily, are slated for delivery in 2027.

The new dual-fuel ammonia-ready gas carriers will be equipped with an innovative cargo handling system designed for maximum flexibility and efficiency, Purus explained.

Once delivered, the vessels will boost Purus’ ammonia transport fleet to nine units. The fleet consists of three 40,000 cubic meter MGCs currently in operation, and four additional 45,000 cubic meter MGCs set to be delivered in 2025 and 2026.

Earlier this year, one of the company’s gas carriers, Green Power, completed a ship-to-ship ammonia transfer close to the port of Ceuta in the Strait of Gibraltar.

Taking part in the global shift towards clean energy transport and storage solutions, Purus also formed an alliance with Bluewater, a provider and offshore operator of floating (production) storage units, mooring systems, and offshore terminals.

The alliance aims for the worldwide provision of clean energy floating storage and offloading (FSO) solutions for low-carbon ammonia, clean hydrogen, and carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS).
