Denmark-headquartered power cable manufacturer and installation company NKT has begun construction to expand its cable factory in Asnaes to increase medium-voltage power cable production capacity to support growing demand across Europe.
NKT held the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the cable factory yesterday, September 30, which includes a new factory hall and new test facilities, expected to be completed in 2026.
It is expected that approximately 100 new employees will be hired in connection with the expansion.
According to the company, the move is a response to the expected continued growth of the market for power cable solutions for critical infrastructure in Denmark and Europe.
“Even though NKT has grown to be a global company today, our Danish roots are significant. In terms of production, we have a strong foothold in Northern Europe, and our Danish production capacity is an important factor in developing and strengthening our business in medium-voltage cables. We look forward to expanding the Danish production and our presence in Asnaes,” said Carlos Fernandez , EVP and Head of the Applications business unit covering low and medium voltage cables at NKT.
The news comes as NKT in July commenced works on a new cable extrusion tower for a power cable factory in Karlskrona, Sweden, which is expected to be the world’s largest high-voltage offshore power cable factory upon completion.
The new tower is part of a larger investment program in the company’s high-voltage power cable business, which entails a second cable-laying vessel (CLV) set to be operational from 2027 alongside the factory expansion.
Also prompted by growing market demand and customer requirements, NKT recently made a number of upgrades on its CLV NKT Victoria after obtaining certification to use biofuels for the vessel. Last month, NKT revealed that it was also expanding its operations at another Swedish site to boost the production capacity of high-voltage accessories.
