Yinson unit sets plan for Singapore’s next fully electric cargo vessel in motion

MarinEV, marine electrification business of Singapore-based green technology solutions provider Yinson GreenTech (YGT), has launched the Hydromover 2.0 project, a part of the company’s Hydromover product line of zero-emission electric vessels for light cargo transfer within the port of Singapore , with sea trials set to begin in 2025.

Building on Singapore’s first fully electric cargo vessel, Hydromover 1.0, which was launched in November 2023, the 23-meter-long Hydromover 2.0 is designed with ‘significant’ enhancements.

The enhancements include larger deck space designed to carry up to 30 metric tons of cargo payload, including batteries, or 25% more compared to Hydromover 1.0.

Additionally, the vessel design, awarded to Australian marine engineering company Incat Crowther, is optimized to allow the Hydromover 2.0 to achieve greater energy efficiency, aiming for more energy cost and emission savings, Yinson explained.

Classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) will class the new vessel with the Battery System notation that covers design assessment for the battery system functionality and safety feature, fire protection, and system certification. According to Yinson, Hydromover 2.0 has already received approval in principle (AiP) from BV based on the design submissions.

The vessel is expected to be ready for sea trial from the third quarter of 2025 onwards, joining marinEV’s fleet of electric vessels including the Hydroglyder (crew transfer service), to support the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA)’s decarbonization target to have all new harbor craft be fully electric or operate on lower carbon fuels by 2030.
